There are a number of potential opportunities for financial support available to you as a student in Reading and Language Arts. The Reading and Language Arts Center offers the following financial assistance opportunities:

College Learning Strategies Graduate Assistantships

These consist of a one-year graduate assistantship award including a yearly stipend and 24 credits of remitted tuition per year. Students receiving these awards serve as graduate instructors in the College Learning Strategies Program, teaching study skills and providing one-on-one tutoring for college students. This award is given primarily to masters or doctoral students who have had extensive experience in teaching reading with older students. Applicants interested in these assistantships should contact the Director of the College Learning Strategies Program, Dr. Marlene Blumin, at (315) 443-4755 to obtain further information.

Graduate Assistantships in Literacy, English Education and Learning Disabilities

These consist of a one-year award including a yearly stipend and either 12 or 24 credits of remitted tuition per year. Students receiving these awards serve as research or teaching assistants to the Reading and Language Arts Center faculty or as graduate instructors. This award is usually reserved for Doctoral students but can also be awarded to Masters and C.A.S. Students who have demonstrated exceptional academic achievement and who have had significant experience in teaching reading, English, or literacy. To be considered for these assistantships, students have only to check on the form SU application form that "'yes, they wish to be considered for a university scholarship." No other steps are necessary.

Summer Assistantships in Literacy, English Education and Learning Disabilities

These consist of $400 or $800 awards given to Masters, C.A.S., Or Doctoral students who have been enrolled in a Syracuse University reading program. These awards typically require 10 hours of work per week for the first and/or second summer sessions; the work entails assisting professors in their summer teaching. To apply for one of these awards, contact the Reading and Language Arts Center Chair at (315) 443-4755 by March 15.

William D. Sheldon Fellowship

This award consists of an annual stipend with no work requirements which is awarded to Masters, C.A.S., Or Doctoral students in reading education who have made unique and significant contributions to the area of literacy and who wish to further their career through advanced training. Students are automatically considered for this award when they are accepted into a reading program. This award is determined by the Reading and Language Arts Center Faculty and will be granted in mid-April.
