Admissions

You are encouraged to apply online at Syracuse University School of Education's official online application.

The prospectus for graduate study in the School of Education is available from the program coordinator, or from the Graduate School (e-mail: gradschl@syr.edu or phone 315-443-3028). It provides an overview of all the graduate degree programs of the School of Education, and it contains a common application. Applications are to be sent only to Graduate Admissions Processing; that office forwards materials to the program coordinator.

There is no application deadline. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, and applicants are notified of the decision a few weeks after the complete application is received. Applicants should indicate the semester in which they intend to begin course work.

However, students who wish to be considered for fellowships, scholarships, and graduate assistantships should submit one application to the Graduate School. They should also send a separate letter to the program coordinator to call attention to that expectation.  There is no separate application for University Fellowships, but there is a separate application for School of Education scholarships; it can be obtained from the Office of Academic and Student Services, 270 Huntington Hall, 315-443-2506. Graduate assistantships in Teaching and Leadership Programs, the home of Teaching and Curriculum, are typically awarded near the end of the spring semester for the coming year.

Procedures

Each faculty member in the program independently reviews the applicant's folder and completes the admissions assessment form. Final decisions are made after reviewing the application and reaching consensus. The specific criteria used for the purpose of granting admission are identified on the assessment form and reflect potential for meeting program standards and dispositions.

In situations where there is a significant discrepancy in ratings, faculty members meet to discuss the candidate and make a final determination. The applicant may be admitted conditionally and asked to meet additional requirements, may be required to submit additional information before a final decision is made, or the applicant may not be admitted, with the application forwarded to another program.

Once admitted, a Program of Study is completed and the student is assigned a faculty advisor.
