1.  Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program

The Fulbright Classroom Teacher Exchange Program provides opportunities for teachers to participate in direct exchanges of positions with colleagues from more than 20 other countries for a semester or academic year.  By living and working in the cultures of their host countries, Fulbright teachers gain an understanding and appreciation of the similarities and differences in national cultures and education systems.  Fulbright teachers enrich their schools and communities with a new awareness of other cultures and of events occurring in different parts of the world, providing students and citizens with new perspectives about the world in which they live.

For the past decade, the School of Education has been a national site for Classroom Teacher Exchange Program peer reviews.  Prospective candidates have been interviewed from New York State and several other states within the northeast region as part of the program application process.

2. Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching

The Distinguished Fulbright Awards in Teaching Program recognizes and encourages excellence in teaching in the U. S. and abroad and is sponsored by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs, U.S. Department of State.  It promotes mutual understanding among people of the United States and other countries by sending highly accomplished primary and secondary teachers from the U.S. abroad and bringing international teachers to the U.S for a three to six month long program. In 2011-12, the participating countries are: Argentina, Finland, India, Israel, Mexico, Morocco, Singapore, South Africa, and the United Kingdom.

The Syracuse University’s School  of Education has for the past two years been one of a select group of higher education institution to participate in the review of candidates for this highly prestigious program that provides U.S. award recipients with the opportunity to study in an overseas research center or university. International participants attend a single U.S. university college of education to take a broad range of education classes and receive faculty support.

3. International Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs)

Thailand - Assumption College
On July 24, 2009, in a three hour ceremony,  Brother Anant Prichavudhi (G ’89, IDD&E), Director of Assumption College in Bangkok, Thailand signed a Memorandum of Understanding for educational cooperation with the Syracuse University School of Education.  In 2011 a cohort of 14 Thai students earned Certificates of Advance Studies in Educational Technology from IDD&E which qualifies them for the Master’s degree program.   Assumption College also has a shared interest in recruiting SU School of Education graduates to teach and become an integral part of their English Program because their students are taught in English only.

Kenya – Kenyatta University

Kenyatta University, Kenya and the Syracuse University School of Education signed an MOU in 2000 that continues to foster and develop cooperative relationships between the two universities in many areas including teaching, research, exchange of faculty and graduate students and staff development.  Several Kenyatta University graduate students have received degrees from the School of Education because of this linkage.  This summer, July 20 – 22, 2011, both universities along with Uganda’s Makerere University will co-sponsor the third International Conference on Education, “Quality Education for Societal Transformation” at Kenyatta University.

Indonesia – Universitas Negeri Jakarta

An MOU was signed between Universitas Negeri Jakarta and Syracuse University School of Education in 2006 to promote academic and socio-cultural understanding for their students and faculty members.  Initiatives between the schools have included Universitas Negeri Jakarta doctoral students spending a semester in the School of Education in dissertation study internship programs and School of Education faculty teaching at Universitas Negeri Jakarta.
