Liberty Partnerships Program
Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP) is a program funded by New York State Education Department. Syracuse University partners with the Syracuse City School District, community organizations, businesses, and parents to help students graduate from high school and go on to higher education or meaningful employment.
The Syracuse University Liberty Partnerships Program offers students in grades 6-8 grades in Syracuse public schools the assistance they need. The program two purposes are:
- To identify students are risk of dropping out of school.
- To provide those students with services to improve their ability to complete high school and advance to postsecondary education and the workforce.
LPP provides funding and collaborative opportunities for basic and advanced academic skills development through special classes and tutorial services, educational, personal and family counseling, career and college exploration activities, mentoring, and a variety of enrichment activities for students. All students enrolled in LPP are counseled on academics, life situations, and career and college choices. LPP staff contact parents, teachers, and counselors on a regular basis to advocate for students and their families.
Liberty Partnerships is a year round, New York State initiative, with 57 programs in place across the state. It is a partnership of higher education, city schools, and community organizations. Since its inception in 1988, it has proven very successful.
Teachers, school staff, counselors, students, and families can recommend young people for the program. Participation is free and income is not a factor, but the student needs to meet NY State criteria. Students must apply with parental consent through their school. Once accepted, students work with certified teachers and counselors on academic and personal goals. Parents are encouraged to be involved at every level, particularly by joining in parent discussion groups. All activities take place after school at the middle schools. Students also attend cultural events such as plays, art exhibitions, historic site visits, concerts, and sports events.
A five-week Summer Leadership Institute takes place on Syracuse University Campus.
Upon completing 8th grade, participants continue receiving LPP services in high school through the OCC and Le Moyne LPPs.
