CURRICULUM
VITAE ABSTRACT
General interests
are in the areas of counselor education, cross-cultural psychology, communication,
intercultural training, international education, constructive conflict
management, alternative and complementary therapies and educational development.
Primary interests include the effect of group difference on interpersonal
and intra-personal interaction between cultural and nationality identities
in the educational setting, multinational corporation, public or private
sector and in the community. Educational
experience includes an A.A. degree from Grand View Junior
College in 1956, a B.A. in 1958 from the University of Minnesota in
History and Philosophy; an M.A. in 1959 in American Studies from the
University of Minnesota; an M.Th. from the Lutheran School of Theology
in Chicago in 1962; an M.S. in Counseling and Student Personnel Psychology
from the University of Minnesota in 1966; and a Ph.D. in Asian Studies
(including examining fields of Counseling, Cultural History, Comparative
Religion, and Political Theory) at Claremont Graduate School in 1968.
International
experience includes teaching at an Indonesian University
for three years; teaching in the University of Malaysia and doing research
in Malaysia for two years; full time study of Mandarin in Taiwan for
one year; a Foreign Student Advisor/Counselor in the International Student
Advisor's Office of the University of Minnesota from 1971 to 1978; External
Examiner at three universities in Malaysia; Numerous consulting experiences
in Asia, Australia, Africa, South America and Europe; and a Senior
Fulbright award teaching at National Taiwan University 1999-2000.
Other U.S. employment
has included an Assistant Professorship at the University of Minnesota
from 1971-1975; Senior Fellow at East West Center, 1975-1976; an Associate
Professorship in the Department of Psycho-Educational Studies, University
of Minnesota from 1976-1979; a Research Fellowship at East West Center
1978-1981; Visiting Professor in Psychology, University of Hawaii, 1979-1981;
Summer School Faculty at Harvard University, 1984-1988; University of
Pittsburgh - Semester at Sea, Spring 1992; Syracuse University, Department
of Human Services 1982-1996.
Publications
include authoring or editing 40 books, 74 chapters in books, 99 articles
and 19 other monograph-length published or circulated documents.
Research activities include
translation and administration of a 500 item multi-scaled inventory
in Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore; survey research on Malaysian student
attitudes for the Japanese newspaper Yomuri Shimbun; Co-Director of
Research for a 10 day intercultural communication laboratory for 60
Japanese/U.S. intercultural communication experts at Nihonmatsu, Japan
funded by the Lily Foundation; re-entry research among LASPAU students
from Brasil; Director of Research on Sex-role Stereotypes in Higher
Education on an HEW grant; Director of a 3 year NIMH mental health training
program; two National Science Foundation travel grants to present papers
at the Pacific Science Association meetings in New Zealand and the Philippines;
National Science Foundation 6 year grant to study the re-entry adjustment
of engineers returning to Taiwan after study abroad; National Institute
of Education grant to develop a measure of cross-cultural counseling
skill; State of New York Department of Social Services grant to develop
mental health training materials on unaccompanied refugee minors; a
two year Harvard Institute for International Development project in
Indonesia to evaluate and up-grade training at Bank Rakyat Training
Centers; a National Association of Foreign Student Affairs grant for
a research conference in November, 1992 on the Reentry of ASEAN and
Pacific Island Students; an Asian Foundation grant to Co-organize a
conference in Penang, Malaysia on constructive conflict management in
a cultural context.
Courses were
taught in departments of Psychology, Counselor Education,
Psycho-educational Studies, Social Work, Social Science, Speech and
Communication, University College, and Harvard University Summer School
and undergraduate Arts and Sciences, and School of Management.
Consulting activities
have included work in over a dozen countries with public and private
organizations. Consulting has included an average of ten or more training
seminars a year on aspects of intercultural communication or mental

Language skills
include speaking Danish from my childhood, lecturing at the university
level in Bahasa Indonesia for three years, and studying Mandarin full
time for one year. I can carry on a conversation in Mandarin, Danish
and Indonesian or Malay, but have a better understanding of Indonesian
or Malay.
